There is no such thing as a name that will go well with any first name. One has to be shorter than the other. Example: Jonathan Nathaniel, both are too long. Better would be Jonathan Kyle, or Jonathan Scott. Jonathan Rae would sound good also. For a girl Kathryn Elizabeth is too much. Kathryn Renee would be good.

Anne and Lynne seem to be the most common middle names among girls that I know. Especially with the name Elizabeth--most of the girls I know named Elizabeth have Anne as their middle name. As far as boy names, I think that Joseph makes a good middle name for most first names.
Short, one-syllable names seem to go with a lot of first names. =)
