Although I've just skied there, my opinion is that Vail would be a very expensive place to raise a family. The majority of people there are short-term tourists, although I know they do have some year-round residents and services. If your family is into skiing and other outdoor sports, Vail would be a dream come true. It's located in a beautiful area, but only two hours from Denver. For the right kind of family with a lot of money, Vail would be great, but I don't think it's for everyone.

Absolutely not.

The kids would have very little to do except outdoor stuff. The place is full of very rich people with very rich people values. It's a ski resort, not a town, all condos and shops, no downtown.

Even Aspen would be far better, still too rich, but more a real town. But my first choice would be a place that's even more real and not so wealthy, more representative of the real world. Not a ski resort. In central Colorado, that would be something like Glenwood Springs or maybe Gunnison (if skiing is a big deal, that's less than an hour (30 miles) from Crested Butte, by a flat valley road). Salida (artists town) might be interesting, but I've seen lots of cruising at night by kids with not enough to do.

Of course, that's a problem in any small town. All the places we're talking about are 5-10,000.

I have to agree with the other posters. Vail is a beautiful town, but is very touristy. And it is VERY expensive.

If you're thinking of moving to a mountain town, I would suggest Salida or Buena Vista. They are cozy, small family friendly mountain towns that are not near as expensive as Vail and not as touristy either. Neither are too far a distance to drive to Colorado Springs or Pueblo, the 'big' cities. And both are just as picturesque, if not more.

I don't think so. It's VERY expensive and full of lazy ski bums. I wouldn't do it. But don't give up on Colorado. Metro Denver and Colorado Springs are two of the best family towns in the country. People still have traditional family values, are big church-goers, and schools aren't nearly as bad as they are in many other cities. Many activities and museums are very child-friendly, to. The Front Range is safe and clean and provides one of the best setting for raising a family. I grew up in suburban Denver and I'm raising my family here because it is so good for families. I encourage you do to the same.

Heck no!!! It is very expensive and not to mention full of snobs. If you looking for a ski town of sorts, try Steamboat Springs, they have a really good school program and also a great Winter Sports Club program catering to children. The town is land locked which is nice, very welcoming and not too small of a town. Lots of outdoor activities to partake in both during the summer and winter season. Check it out:)

yes if you have mega bucks and can afford to put your kids in private school and not have to commute to work. Try metro Denver or Colorado Springs
