I need to replace a piece of sheet rock to one side of a door. Should the joint be directly above the edge of the door or make the joint a foot in from corner

its best to hang a full sheet over the door and cut the door out, the reason why is that your house settles, and causes a stress crack across the seam, but if you don't have a seam, it's kind of hard to cause a stress crack, and it's easier to tape later.

While it's tempting to run whole pieces straight up the frame, these joints have a greater potential to crack from settling and slamming doors. When sheetrock is hung over new construction, the joint should be in the center of the door (or close to it). Repairs should be made keeping this priciple in mind, in your case, moving the joint in at least one stud from the corner.

I run a sheet around the whole door frame, putting the joints only on each side of the frame... steel framing you stand up the sheets vertical, in wood framing you lay them down horizontally
