Instead of just saying the casual,"thanks," try answering with a small joke that goes along with the idea of thanking someone.

kind of mean but funny:
so are you, but looks aren't everything
or point to one of your funny friends and say "i learned from the best" and pat him on the back

depending on the situation and my mood, i will react as follows:
grouchy--"what do you mean funny?!!?" "roll my eyes and give a fake smile with a 'duh' look"
amused--"really?" "in a good or bad sense?" "hehehe :D"
sarcastic--"oh thank you, while looking disinterested and not smiling" "exactly like how you'ld act, right? with a 'duh' look"
embarrassed--"oh... haha..." "just smile and look down without saying a word"

It usually gets pretty awkward so when you find out let me know. I once tried saying "so is your face"....yeah I felt like a total jerk.
