well i ask because many teachers in my school get mad at me for talking in spainsh to my friends. they justify themselves by saying that were talking stuff about other people. and that isint the case i usually talk spanish because sometimes it is easyer to express myself in spainsh with my friends. and please dont get mad at me for saying this but then there are the amish kids talking their language that nobody else understands but its OK for them. Give me your opinion on this. and YES i am aware tha we are in the U.S.

If you are "on your own time" (not during actual class time) its up to you--the teacher is out of line. However--be careful. If this is the case, then the teachers are bigots--that's the bottom line. Which means you cannot count on them telling the truth if confronted. Tell your parents what is happening--and then let them take it from there--and follow their advice.

My concern here is your welfare. This kind of thing is wrong--but (as you are probably well aware) there are a lot of bigoted people out there. And you as a minor under the schools authority are not in a position to defend yourself.

Beyond that--my advice is to talk to your friends (outside school) and try to work out a way to avoid speaking spanish during school hours. That's not fair--but the idea is to keep you out of trouble . There will be time as you get older to confront such people when you can do so in the right way and on equal terms.

Well if it is easier to express yourself in Spanish then you definitely need the practice in English (or more exactly, American).
You can talk to your friends outside of class in any language you would like, but in class the teacher needs to be able to understand the conversations around her. To keep talking about others to a minimum, yes. But also so that she will know when talk is off the lesson subject to bring it back on topic. And so she will know where someone may need extra help by what they are asking other students.
PS- The Amish kids you are speaking of have Amish teachers. Thus they are not speaking an outside language, but a common language in their classroom.

I think it's okay, unless it disrupts the class. I don't see why one can't; it's not like English was made the official language of the US. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the US made up of many diverse cultures with different languages? The US wouldn't be what it is now unless for its distinct diversity.

I believe it is spelled Spanish, and you only have the right to speak it in Spanish class. I am certain your parents want you to practice good manners in public, school or other arenas. If you do not have parents, then you may have a good excuse. If you do have parents, do not disrespect them in this manner. I am sure they worked hard to earn the respect of the Americans they deal with, and you should as well. When you encounter Americans in Mexico who speak only English, what happens to your respect for them? They are considered rude and arrogant. The same rule applies to you.

You have every right to speak in any language as long as you're not being disruptive...

Kids pass notes all the time...to me that is more disruptive than if someone is speaking to a friend in Spanish, German, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Latin, Italian, English, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Greek, Chinese, Korean, or ASL...I do believe that could be an ACLU type of situation...you are being discriminated against because of your language choice.

Amish kids do go to public school, and yes, it is rude for them and yourself to speak a language that the others don't in front of them. I believe if you want to live here, you and the amish, then in public you should speak english, if you're at home, speak whatever you want.

although Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, it should be ok, but the teachers are in charge of their class rooms and what they say goes, it's out of respect for them you do as they ask.
