I'm asking, or begging, you! I have looked at many sites but I can't find the yarns I want!

Knitting is so tactile, I'd be afraid to buy anything without touching it. But if you all ready own some of the yarn and simply want more of the same, there is usually a web-site printed on the ball band.

Even though I own a yarn shop and do ship to my customers who find me online, I HIGHLY recommend going to a yarn shop in the area first. Here's why: the touch test! I have gone to yarn shops in my travels and found exquisite yarns that seemed a bit pricey. Having held them and really gotten a feel for them (which is the best part -- you wouldn't buy a car without test-driving it first!), I've made a note of the brand and style. Then, when I get home I do a Google search for that yarn. I go through the yarn shops that have been pulled up in the search results and compare the prices. When I find the best price for a yarn that I already have touched and seen, I then feel confident buying it. Also, many yarn shops have websites, but do not have actual online selling features. If they list the brands that they carry, send them an email and ask if they will sell to you. Most will say yes. A few, like myself, will even give you free shipping on any size order just because they know you could have gone elsewhere for your fiber but you chose them.

Also, if you already know the yarn you want, go to that company's website. They should have a listing of the stores that carry their yarns, along with an online retailer directory where you can purchase their yarns online. The only company I know of that doesn't do this is Knitting Fever. Unfortunately, they are one of my largest suppliers, and I have had customers tell me that the only way they found me was by calling KFI directly and asking where they could get their yarns. KFI handles yarns such as Louisa Harding, Debbie Bliss, Maggi Knits, Elsebeth Lavold, Queensland, Noro, and lots others. You can see the brands they carry on the site www.knittingfever.com but not the stores they ship to. Here are a few other sources to find online retailers of specific yarns: www.dale.no, www.o-wool.com, www.interlacementsyarns.com, www.straw.com (crystal palace) I hope this information helps!

If you, like me, are looking for good quality yarn at reasonable prices, check out www.knitpicks.com. They sell their own brand of yarn. Shipping is free with orders of $45 or greater. I have been very happy with the quality of yarn I have purchased from them.

I do agree with the other poster however, on the importance of feeling yarns. If you are not sure if you want an alpaca or mohair, you need to touch both and feel the difference.

Elann.com and Smileys.com are supposed to be good places. It really depends on what yarns you want to buy. Personally, I like www.yarn.com (Webs) and www.knitwitts.com.
