I think that a lot of masculine gays take issue with effeminacy because they mistakenly believe that society will be more accepting of gays if they are masculine.
I'm somewhat effeminate. I always have been, and it's something that's innate. I'm not "acting" as anything, nor am I "advertising" my gayness.
Btw, I despise it when some gays refer to themselves with the term "straight-acting".

You know, you can't argue logical with delusion. They have all the equipment to deny reality, and they'll just say something like "Yeah, they just love to sin, they love being godless..blah blah" I've heard it all, and it never ceases to amaze me how much BS they can come up with. You know someone is denying reality when they reject scientific evidence from the American Psychology Association and Canadian Psychological Association that say that homosexuality is not a choice, is not a result of any abnormalities, and is not changeable. They see this science as tools of some sneaky little devil who causes petty "confusion" for a few giggles. Yeah, it's so childish, but these aren't children who believe it. You're wrong though, mostly all people in the gay community have decided to be straight. The only problem is that it doesn't work. There is no invisible man in the sky or sneaky mischievous rebel under the ground that can help/hurt you. I remember always choosing to be straight, but I always knew it's not my choice...it's just the life I would have chosen. After years, I learned not to argue with them. There isn't enough logic in the world to break there impenetrable walls of delusion.

My Mother had an easier time imagining what I might do sexually with another man than she did when I wanted to dress up like a girl for Halloween!
I blame Catholicism. The bible trimmed the bible of the Feminine side of God, Mother God. This, plus the male dominance over the centuries play a big part in the non acceptance of women in general. Even lower than the woman is the man who feminizes his masculinity. In this male dominated society this has got to be the queen mother of all sins!! Also I think this is why there are so many out Gays and Lesbians today. What is hidden or masked comes up in a big way. I think nature just naturally balances things. Mother and Father God is just evening things out!

I believe it's ridiculed because it doesn't fit into the prevalent mold society dictates for men. Regardless of sexual orientation, Western culture deems the masculine "hunter" variety to be the most worthy and rewards that type with more of just about everything.
It goes all the way back to our time in caves. The butch male who could bring home the most bacon was rewarded with the best mates and the closest position to the warm fire.
The femms were left out in the cold. Perhaps that's why they took up sewing: to make warmer clothes. Over time, that talent lent itself to making more fabulous clothes.

I'm surprised by the question - i don't think they do. But the amount of cruelty and alienation that goes on in the gay community is heart-breaking. It is a sad paradox that an 'alternative' community should in many ways be so rigidly conformist. perhaps this applies to 'effeminate' men too.

I'm with Ash.. I hate the term "straight-acting." As if that is some kind of honorable distinction.
"In winning approval from mainstream society we have sacrificed the attitude, flamboyance, and outrageousness that once defined us. It makes me long for an era when to be gay was to be in the underground, and to be in the underground was sexy." --Aaron Hicklin, Editor in Chief, Out Magazine

While women who act masculinly are prized for it. We associate effiminacy with "weakness", when a male displays it, it is an obvious point by which we can judge them as weaker than ourselves. And if there's one thing human beings love to do, it is judge others. We all love to make others the stepping stones for our egos, don't we?

I'm not effeminate and the only people that i have ever met that have called me "straight acting" are other gay guys...usually the ones who are effeminate. i dont refer to myself as so. i also certainly have no problem with guys that act effeminate. im sorry if any of you have had bad experiences on that subject with other gay guys. we have so much other sh*t to deal with in this world we need to at least be able to rely on one another

I really don't understand this. In some cultures feminine behaviour is revered as something akin to spiritual...but in the western world it is seen as a sign of self indulgence and weakness. I don't get it at all....sorry.

I don't know....I know that when I first "came out"I had some issues with stereotyping...
I came to conclusion that all levels of fem and masc. have been around for centuries and not everyone is the same...
Its life....
