Hi! Pale nails is a condition known as leuconychia. Leuconychia can be caused by a variety of things from something as simple as an injury to the nail, fungal infections to more serious conditions such as liver or kidney disease.

It would be a good idea to see your family physician and have him or her run some simple blood tests to check your kidney and liver function, as well as your thyroid function. An underactive or overactive thyroid can both cause paleness of the nails. Both of these conditions can be ruled out by simple blood tests.

As far as vitamin deficiencies go, a generalized state of malnutrition can cause the nails to appear pale in color. Anemia caused by iron deficiency can cause leuconycia which would be more common in women who are vegetarians or who have heavy menstrual bleeding. Other vitamins that are known to cause this condition are deficiencies of zinc, calcium, and the B vitamins.

It's interesting to note that the nails can be an important reflection of what's going on with the rest of the body. It's good that you picked up on this change and are searching for answers. All the best to you. :-)
