how would i get from Newark,NJ to tourist stuff in new york cheaply and quickly, is driving bad idea?

The train is the only good choice. They run about every 20 min or so and are pretty cheap.

If you're in Newark then taking the train would be your best bet for one main reason... Parking in NYC is very expensive. If you want to explore the city and see some sites, walking is the key. You can take the train to a spot that's remotely close and go at the rest on foot.
