i have a 1986 ford ranger with the 2.3 four cylinder. i have a problem with the fuel pump. the fuel pump keeps running continuously when you turn the key on. i have already changed the fuel pressure regulator and that did not help. is it a sensor or the pump itself or any other ideas. there are no trouble lights on in the cab. it is running like an old carburated engine that's loading up in midrange power. this truck is fuel injected and i have cleaned the injectors thoroughlly.

most of the rangers had 2 fuel pumps 1 in the tank 1 on the frame rail 1 is high pressure 1 is low pressure . they also have a reservior mounted next to the pump thats on the frame rail , i would first replace the relay, if that doesn't help replace the high pressure pump

If the pump is running continuously then it is not getting up to pressure. Buddy had a problem similiar and it turned out to be a bad hose in the gas tank and the pump was putting out the fuel, but it was leaking through the hose and going back into the tank. His was a turbo t-bird which has a higher fuel pressure, so he saved a lot of bucks on not having to replace the pump. Check that or at least check the fuel pressure to the injectors.

your not getting pressure somewhere,or your losing it as fast as it comes.check the fuel pump pressure at the fuel rail.maybe its the gas cap bad.its suppose to run until it gets the pressure it needs and then stops, until the pressure begins to go down, then it starts back up again.
