10-12 hours is good for most fish. Now, really room light is enough for them, you don't really have to run the lights on the tank unless you are looking at the tank, the fish don't really need that much light.

Fishes, and that includes Oscars also, "DO" need light, because in their natural habitat also, they get light. If your tank gets no natural day light, then anywhere between 6-12 hours is sufficient.

Less (6-7 hrs) if you do not have live plants in the tank, more (10-12 hrs) if you have them.

10 hours of light is average for all fish. Any less and it can affect their body's ability to produce Vitamin D. If you go more, you can increase the tank's ability to produce algae :)

10 hours max. Any more than that is excessive and will just encourage more algae growth.

well about 0 - 6 hours....planted tanks need more hours....
