I just started ovulating again 4 months ago after I lost a lot of weight. My cycles are 52 days and I never noticed having any abdominal pains during my cylce at all until this morning(4/9/07) about 30 minutes before taking my bbt. I'm due to ovulate in 2 more weeks but I got a temp shift today at 97.9 and the last 7 days was between 96.8 - 97.3. Could this be a early ovulation and was the abdominal pain from ovulation bc it started cramping the same morning the shift took place.Has anyone else been through this?

If you take your temperatures correctly then it is a very reliable system, especially if you are watching your cervical mucus, too.

The fact that you are having very low pre-ovulation temps (i.e. they are all 97.3 and under) means you might have low thyroid function and this could definitely be causing other cycle irregularities for you. Low thyroid function can not only give you really low temps but also cause overly long cycles (like yours), cycles where you never ovulate and low sexual desire.

Do you have enough iodine (from salt) in your diet? Vitamin A is also essential to thyroid health. You might considering supplementing with 1 or both of these to improve your thyroid function. It is key to stimulating hormones, which are key to healthy reproduction.

Losing weight can also affect a woman's cycle as having "too little" body fat is unhealthy for reproduction. Is it possible you lost too much weight and are not at your ideal height/weight ratio?

There's a good book about all this....called Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon.

To answer your other question, it is documented that some women experience ovulatory pain or cramps. However, your cramping would probably NOT have occurred at the temperature shift because the upward shift means ovulation is past. Women get ovulation pain or cramps right before OR during ovuation.

According to the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility if you had a true charted temp shift then you already ovulated. It happens the day after and for most woman the egg is already gone by then. But you said you had the cramp 30 mins before taking your bbt. Again the book says you must take your temp first thing in the morning before you even move and after at least 6 hours of sleep. Cramping is a secondary sign that not all women get so it is hard to judge ovulation on that. Get that book it's amazing!

I have had ZERO luck with temping in 8 years, another way to keep track is using an ovulation predictor kit, but even those I failed to be able to use. On;y thing I could use was my body giving me a little cramp, pinching like pain at ovulation. that is all I ever have, and have proven it by Ultrasound during cycles.
