1) Nearly any female adult guppy you ever find is pregnant. They can mate once in the tank at the store and have several batches of babies from that one mating.
2) They will need to have been exposed to a male at some point in their adult life to be pregnant, but not nessecarily in your tank. See explaination above.
3) That depends on the fish, some females don't seem to mind being in the box, others kind of freak out.
4) Anywhere from 10 to about 60 but 20-30 is common.
5) Yes, it is possible. One reason could be a lack of water flow through the box leading to no oxygen in the fish's water. I theory, she could have a heart attack from stressing out, but I think that would be really rare.
Hope that helps

1. you will be able to tell if she is pregnant when she becomes bigger and her gravid spot grows (which is on the bottom near her bottom.) Then right before she has the babies she will get really slow and sink to the bottom of the tank. FOR MORE INFO TO THIS QUESTION: http://www.aquariumhobbyist.com/guppies/pregnancy.html
2. Yes there must be a male for her to get pregnant, but you could have bought her already pregnant.
3. As long as you are feeding it and it can swim. You should only keep her in there as long as she is pregnant and pull her out after you are sure is done giving birth. (this way she won't eat the babies.)
4. Some times the amount of fry (babies) can range from 8-15. But rarely will they all live. This is all natural.
5. Yes there is a possibility that the mother dies but i am not sure why, some times birth complications.
Good Luck.

1) You can sometimes tell that it is pregnant after a while it's stomach will get bug(of course).
2) Yes, It does need a male in the tank unless it is mutated or something
3) It should stay in there until the babies are born because you will never know excactly when but when they are born if they aren't in a box or little cage the other fish may eat them or chase them.
4) It can have alot. Mine had like 24 but eventually we had 7.
5) I am not sure.

better than a breeding box is some plants. get some anacharis which is cheap and just let it float. babies will hide in there. assuming u dont have some voracious fish in the tank otherwise keep to the box. my plants do well with a shot of fertilizer every couple of weeks and one fluroescant bulb on a ten gallon tank. good luck. and congrats on your new babies
