Is it possible and/or advisable to do a European-style backpacking trip through the American Southwest/Mexico?

I want to do some traveling this summer but I'm on a tight budget. I live in Colorado during the summers so I always thought about doing an extended hike or backpacking tour of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and possibly Mexico.

A european style backpacking trip would be a little difficult since the public transportation system in europe is much more developed than in the southwest. you could do it, but it would be expensive. Amtrack ain't cheap and I don't know how bus serviceis out there. I'm not saying ot couldn't be done, just not as easily as in europe.
