It's in/near a bad part of Vegas. Some friends and I went to the Top of the World Steakhouse and our cabby told us not to stray to far from the hotel. It is way off the strip not close to anything. If you are looking to see the sights you will be paying a lot for a cab back and forth.
If you are looking to save money on a room may I suggest the following:
Harrahs has a monorail stop at the hotel
Imperial Palace has a monorail stop at the hotel
Excalibur

All three are located on or near the "new" strip.

The Stratosphere is a very nice hotel, you're going to have a great time. The strip is 4 miles long, you can't walk from any hotel to all of the others comfortable anyway. So what if the Stratosphere happens to be at one end of the strip.

All you have to do is walk out the front door of the Stratosphere and catch the Deuce(double decker bus) that runs up and down the strip. It only costs $5 for a 24 hour pass.

You're also only a short distance from downtown LV, where the gambling is better and the food is cheaper.

IMHO the Stratosphere is one of the best bargains in LV, you made a great choice.

Because you are a guest at the hotel you can go up to the top on the Stratosphere Tower for free.

The hotel should not be any where near full tomorrow you might try for an upgrade. I have explained several times on here how to go about getting upgrades at check in. >read through some of my answers on the subject of upgrades<

A very nice restaurant for a romantic evening is the "Top of the World" restaurant. It rotates once an hour, and the view from 800ft above LV is spectacular, especially at sunset. 1-702-380-7711

We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years.

Well, I guess it depends on your idea of "nice"... It's not a bad place to stay if you're budget conscious and primarily looking for a place to change clothes and sleep. It's a bit dated and cannot compare to some of the other, newer/fancier strip hotels - but the price is considerably less than the aforementioned hotels. To sum it up - you can safely send postcards to family and friends depicting the stratosphere and not feel embarrassed or low-budget. Plus, the view is one of the best in vegas and they have a great restaurant on premises. However if you are looking for the glitz and glamor of las Vegas you may want to move up the strip a bit.

ive just got back from vegas and i had a good look at all the hotels, so I can help you out here.

To answer your question, yeh, its not a bad hotel at all. But the thing is, its way too far up the strip. Its just too far out.

It comes up at a good price, and thats the reason people are usually drawn to it.

The strip up the top end is nowere near as nice as further down, its looks a bit tacky, and just generally theres not much going on up there.

There are other hotels that come up at a good price, and are quite nice, and are in a much better location. The Flamingo is one that springs to mind straight away. It is right in the middle of the strip, next to the paris, and opposite the bellagio. Its FAR better down there.

On a side note, there are some really bad hotels in Las Vegas.
Ones to avoid are the Travel Lodge (that is BAD) the Frontier, and the Riviera. also the circus circus, avoid that one too!

To answer your q. Yeh its a nice hotel, but if your staying in Vegas its too far out in my opinion.

Hope this helped. Have fun.

Pretty cheap and away trom the major sites, but you should have fun. Do the bungee ride at the top. Don't wet your pants though.
