get a large-mouth jar and fill it with water. about 1/3 of the way from one end of the potato, put 4 toothpicks in radially(like spokes on a wheel - 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions) about half way. the toothpicks will hold one end of the tater up and the rest of the tater will be suspended in the water. put a PINCH of fertilizer in the water. it will start growing roots in like, 2 days, and leaves in about a week. You can pull the vines off right at the surface of the potato and put them right in the ground (mulch it good and keep it moist) to grow more tatersI do it all the time. keep the water changed, because they tend to grow fungus.

Sit a potato(es) in a lighted area(preferably the sun)and let small nubs or protrusions form at the eyes. Cut the potato up so that there is at least one eye with each chunk. Plant each one two inches down and ten inches apart, water. Within a week you will have sweet potato plants starting. Where I live we have had an unexpected reoccurence of winter. So depending upon where you are, you may want to wait about three weeks to begin this process.

This is going to sound strange...

Stick 3 nails into a sweet potato and plant. It should sprout soon enough.

Regular green sweet potato vines are from regular sweet potatoes, but there are other leaf colors that won't grow from the supermarket tubers.

If it doesn't sprout in 2 weeks, give up. Some distributors put some kind of root inhibitor on the potatoes so they will never sprout. I tried sprouting one for 2 months before learned that.
