there are plenty of websites. there are books as well (check your library, a number are mentioned on those links)
below some links, which themselves will give you plenty more links. And book titles about the subject.

Other fun things to do which somehow involve also string is learning to do tricks with a yoyo or a diabolo. Google for more info if you are interested

Hey B Ball Maniac,

Blow up a baloon. Tie a couple together into some shape, then take your string, and dip it in a HIGH concentration of sugar water (yarn works great for this), then wrap the baloons with the string. Keep wrapping until you have a cool pattern of coverage (zig zag wrap the baloons hundreds of times.

Let this dry. Then pop the baloons.

Or

Make rope. Twist 3 strings together COUNTER clockwise, then twist another set of 3 strings, and then a third set - all COUNTER clockwise. Get them all twisted about the same amount, that is quite a bit on each. Then, take the 3 sets of twisted strings, and twist them all together but CLOCKWISE. until it resembles rope. Tie the ends (or whip the rope if you know how, whipping is a technique to tie the ends). To make this rope interesting, vary the colors.
