historically, it was a watch pocket. men used to carry a pocket watch, as wrist watches were considered a feminine accessory...until World War I when that changed out of necessity...doughboys (american soldiers needed a watch for timing of coordinated maneuvers, and pocket watches were impractical on the battlefield. after the "war to end all wars" the troops came home and brought their wristwatches with them. after that, wristwatches became the norm and pocket watches fell out of favor, but the little pocket never went away...nowadays people use them for anything small enough to fit: bus-tokens or subway tokens, condoms, coins, cell-phones, ipod, keys....if it'll fit, they'll use it for that

They use to put the pocket their for when someone carries a Pocket Watch. Trouble anymore is not to many people carry a Pocket Watch.Was a time not that far back when most men carried a Pocket Watch for work at least

I sometimes put a key in there but it has to have a keyring hanging out cos otherwise it gets stuck... damn mini pocket.

it was originally for your pocket watch, you know those a little bigger than the old silver dollar...the watches railroad conductors had so trains ran on schedule...now most people keep change in it...
