for some reason my hard drive wont turn on when i plug it in. I was running out of open usb ports so i plugged in a Dynex 7-port usb hub to get more. i have owned this product for a few months and have always been successful with it. Then the other day when i plugged it and my external 80GB hard drive in it was working fine. i went to the bathroom while my game from the external was loading and everything was fine. when i came back, i smelt something like chlorine, but i figured why get up and look when i can play my game for 2 more mins, its probably nothing serious. When the smell started getting really strong i knew it was near me, before this it was a very weak smell so i figured it was in my neighbors yard or something. i looked around and saw nothing but then looked at the usb hub. it had white smoke pouring out of it. my game had shut off anf my hard drive failed to appear. I tried plugging it in but nothing happened. Does anyone know what happened wrong.

*I had it working*

No my hub will work with this device as i have used it before. i have plugged a keyboard and 3 externals into it at once. this hub was also plugged into a strip so it did not require more energy.

I have used it before, and i did not overload it. the usb hub still works but the hard drive is fried(i think but hoping not) as i stated i have used it before and i know it needs power, thats why i had it plugged in!

Something was fried. Since you say the USB hub still works, are you sure that the physical port on which you plugged the external drive still works? Possible that the one port is dead while the others work on the hub.

If you have not plugged the external drive directly into the computer to try, you should do that. And do not plug in the USB hub when you try.

Also, if you find that the external drive no longer works, you can try to just buy an external drive housing. Put the drive in the housing and most likely it will be ok. This time be sure the drive housing provides its own power. I think it runs around $35-$45.

Good luck.

It sounds like your 7 port usb hub has burnt out. USB devices take their power from the usb port that they are hooked up to. I'm not familiar with external usb hard drives but hard drives in general take up a lot of power. I'd check the hard drive manual to make sure they can be plugged into usb hubs.

You probably overloaded your hub, external hard drives take more power than a typical usb device... Cameras, flash drives, etc... Plug it straight in your pc and if I still does not work. Buy a new one

you fried it by trying to put a load bearing hard drive into a USB hub that cannot handle bearing such a load (USB draws electricity besides data).

You've probably fried the hard drive too... plug it into another computer and see if it works. If it does, then it's just your USB controller in your computer. If it doesn't work on the other computer, it's dead.
