I notice a lot of people voting for the Beatles, but as the were influenced by Buddy Holly and The Crickets, does that not make them more influential by influencing the Beatles. Then you can go back into who influenced Buddy Holly and The Crickets and go on ad infinitum.

The real answer is Jerry Garcia.

You probably won't agree, but Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys will have to be the most influential in my opinion. Today most people have never heard of them but that wasn't the case 30 years ago. You're probably also asking yourself "What does Blue Grass music have to do with any music I've ever heard?" Here's why I think this...Bill Monroe is said to be the father of blue grass, he's the reason they call it "Blue Grass" music because that was the name of his band. (They were from Kentucky, the "blue grass" state) Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys have influenced artists such as Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, The Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Blues Traveler, Alison Kraus & Union Station, and the list goes on and on.....Elvis, Patsy Cline, and Paul McCartney all covered "Blue moon of Kentucky". I know this is a very vague answer, but if you just take a look at some very brilliant artists that you have heard of ..... don't be surprised if you see Bill Monroe's name in there as an influence (or at least blue grass music)!

The Ug Ug Boys. They were the first to bang the rocks together. Largely overlooked now but they went on to inspire groups like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Who, The Rolling Stones and Rush.

the Beatles. Pretty much any other band named was influenced by them0- In a big way. The Beatles created rock and roll. before them, everything was calm, melodic and generally tame. Their style opened everything up for a very different style of music, which has since split off in many directions, resulting in just about every band you see today.

Much bigger then Jesus.
