This song is most popular because of the film "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman as he is seduced by an older woman named Mrs. Robinson.
However, the song was not written FOR the movie - it was already a work in progress, Simon & Garfunkel took snippets of their song and pieced them together to form the one we are all familiar with, to then suit the movie.

If you read the lyrics, you'll find that they have absolutely nothing to do with the story of the movie. Instead, they are about the journey of an elderly woman leaving her life behind to move into a nursing home. The album in which the song appears, "Bookends" is a depiction of how society deems the elderly as worthless, being shoved into nursing homes to get them out of the way.

It's very sad.

The song Mrs. Robinson was actually written about Mrs. Roosevelt, the wife of the former president. But before the song was published, the group that sang the song was asked to use the song in an upcoming movie called "The Graduate." In turn, they changed the name and lyrics to the name of one of the characters in the movie, a Mrs. Robinson. Read more at the site below.

Mrs. Robinson is about an older woman chasing younger men and still keeping up the appearance of being a respectable socialite.

And she didn't seduce a high schooler -- he was a college graduate -- hence the name of the movie: The Graduate
