It is always hard to change what is comfortable to do, which is most likely why you stick with the semi-western grip. This is a problem for everyone, but the Continental grip is the best for serving (and volleys). So to answer your question you can use the semi-western grip for your serves, but it is way better using the continental grip.

The main reason why your balls hit the net is because your not tossing high enough, or your not tossing in front of you.

a semi western grp is used more for hitting a topspin forehand. With this grip in your grip, there isn't any actual form and finesse in the hit when trying to serve w/ a semi western. Just keep practicing with your continental grip. At first, i used the same grip as you. Now, i have perfected my serve with a continental. So practice, practice, practice.

When I first started I use my forehand grip as my service grip. Then my coach made me switch to continental grip. It was a pain at first, hitting every serve all over the place. I just kept on practicing until I got the hang of it.

To answer your question, yes you can use whatever grip you want but the continental grip is the "proper" service grip.

It is a pain in the *** , but you have to make the change to the continental or eastern. It is the only way you will be able to hit all three serves , flat, slice top spin. It will take you about 3 months to get it down , but you will move up about 5 levels in your play once you do. Sorry you have to do it now, whoever was teaching you really screwed up by not starting you with the correct grip .

i really doubt that a slight change in grip will really mess up your serve - IF you are doing everything else right.

without even knowing or seeing your game, i'll tell you that however high your toss is now, make it higher - and fully extend your arm as you come over the serve.

if the toss is high enough and your really extending your arm to it's highest point on impact, the ball will go over the net.

don't get too wound up in grips on the serve, as long as your grip isn't absolutely insane, you should be fine.

You can use whatever grip you want, but an eastern grip helps with topspin to consistently clear the net once you get used to it. I would suspect most second serves are done with topspin to clear the net safely, the pros seem to favor eastern for that purpose.

It's weird, but once you get used to swinging you should notice the difference.

I use the same grip on my serve as I do when I volley.
