Great Britain made its first tentative efforts to establish overseas settlements in the 16th century. By 1670 there were British American colonies in New England, Virginia, and Maryland and settlements in the Bermudas, Honduras, Antigua, Barbados, and Nova Scotia. Jamaica was obtained by conquest in 1655. The fortunes of the Empire fluctuated until the 2nd half of the Twentieth Century, when it began to shrink. The last significant British colony, Hong Kong, was returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. By then, virtually nothing remained of the empire.

England was never a world power. In the early 1700s the were on a par with France and Spain.Of these 3 England had the superior navy.In 1707the govts of Scotland and England were united.Unger the name of Great Britain.Later to include Ireland the UK It was at this time Britain began to aquire power.Usually at the expense of France,Spain,Holland or any other colonial nation.By the 1800s Britain was so powerful that the world traded in the pound sterling(just as today its the US dollar)After the second world war it was foregone conclusion that Britain was indebted so heavily to the US that the US would take over the leadership.
So Britain would have been a leading world power for over 150yrs

From 1763- 1941 England was what today would be considered the superpower. After the Seven Years War the French had lost their standing as a world power and had lost most their over seas possessions and the only way they had to united the to fleets that they had built for their navy with the fall of Gibraltar. The British held that position until in 1941 they proved that they were no longer able to protect their Asian Possessions, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The next superpower will be the country that can project power in such a way as to make it able to defend it's needs in more then one theater of operation the way that the United States was able to fight in WWII in both the European, Mediterranean and the Pacific Theaters of Operation or to control the major trade choke points of the world . This country may not even be a major player on today's stage. Remember the United States was not considered a world power until the early 1900's.

It depends on the criteria you use, but by the death of George III in 1820, England was a super power, and earlier then that can be argued for.

End point is also subject to debate, I would argue for anytime between 1914 and 1947 and again there are any number of pionts where one can make a case.
