To add fractions the bottom number (denominator) has to be the same for both.
So to make them the same we will multiply the top and bottom of 5/9 by 10. Then also multiply the top and bottom of 5/10 by 9. Given us a common denominator of 90.

=> 5/9+5/10 = 50/90 + 45/90

Now we can just add the top numbers (numerators)
So 50/90 + 45/90 = 95/90

We can simplify this:

95/90 = 19/18

you have to have the same denominator when adding
so
5/9 becomes 50/90 [[times top and bottom by 10]]
5/10 becomes 45/90 [[times top and bottome by 9]]

then you add getting 95/90
which is 1 1/18
