Since it is a fact that the police are not a deterrent to crime, and sometimes they contribute to it - Then if we get rid of the police, there'll be a drop in crime?

Not unless you replace the police with some other form of enforcement. Why not just ride herd on the police and do our duties as Citizens and hold all of them accountable?

Ok, this is a stupid observation on your part.

My question to you is,

What would be a detterent to crime?

Anybody would be a fool to commit a crime in front of a police officer. So I would say that is a great detterent.

I know why you believe that police officers contribute to crime. This is what the media would have you believe.

Media will only get good ratings when they broadcast the .5% of what corrupt cops do. They never broadcast the 99.5% of the good deeds policemen do.

This probably doesn't matter to you. I am willing to bet you would commit crimes if there were no police.

Next time you have a probelm, don't call a cop.

There is an old saying that locks keep honest people out.

It means that everyone could fall to temptation, but basic security measures can be used to prevent that temptation. The police are one such basic security method.

Most of the police are law abiding and joined the force to prevent crime. The reason why you hear about the bad apples is that the news reports the exceptions. It isn't newsworthy that thousands of police officers are honest and doing a good job, that is expected. What is newsworthy is the few that aren't. Because you hear those few stories you have a bad opinion of the police.

If we did not have the police then the current crop of criminals who don't commit crimes for fear of being caught would multiple by the thousands as anyone would be able to get commit a crime and not have to worry about paying the penalty for it. There is a word for a state like that; anarchy.

Besides if the very few police that are criminals become criminals with the threat of the law, then what would stop them without the threat of being caught and punished? In fact if anything more ex-police officers would become criminals if for no other reason then an attempt to protect themselves from the criminals that they hunted and captured.

The answer isn't in getting rid of the police, it lies in paying them better so they won't be tempted by crime, and in weeding out those that still fall prey to the temptation to do so. It would be far cheaper to do that then to follow your plan.

If there weren't people on Yahoo Answers looking to report abusers (informal cops) then what would stop me from insulting the heck out of you for asking a question like this or anyone for that matter? You bring up a good point, but your solution is an unworkable one.

There is no fact that stipulates that the police is not a deterrent of crime, as a matter of a fact police are there to protect society from the criminals who choose to commit the crimes. The police are there to prevent further victimization to you as a tax paying citizen. If there were no police, I would rather live in hell than on earth....

Well if there were no police who would you call when you're robbed. Would you do the speed limit everyday or stay just a little over if you knew there were no punishment or enforcement. I don't break the law because I don't want to go to jail, so it deters about 97% of the population with 3% currently incarcerated or under supervision such as parole or probabtion. Not too bad, same percentage of people are literate, maybe we should stop people from learning to read.

How about we let you lose in the getto of ummm New York sounds good, leave you there for about 5 hours and see if you are calling the police.. better yet lets stick you on a dark road with corners everywhere have your hood blow up on your car break go out too... and see if you call someone to help you.. IF YOU DONT KNOW THIS WE NEED THE POLICE.. just because you got in trouble and dont like them, or had a bad run in with one dont mean the rest of us wants to get rid of them...

You are making an incorrect premise---cops do deter crime. If there were more cops on the streets, they would be even less crime.
