Do you mean Fort Knox, which is surrounded by an armor division and is the base for Marine Corp Tank School? Or do you mean a mint like that in Denver?
The simple reason is that the protection there is unreal, and no one has figured out a way to break in. Just like the Federal Mint there are armed guards stationed there and the federal government is very careful.
The weakness in the system is in the transportation of the money from the mint to other locations. Those shipments are guarded and often followed by armed federal agents, but many criminals have tried to highjack them and rob them; too many than I can count.
Robbing the actual mint themselves can be done by people who work there trying to smuggle out the plates or money manufactured there, but that is made insanely difficult by the Federal Government.
The only attempts made to rob the mints themselves are shown in the movie "Goldfinger" and the third "Die Hard" movie. If you watch those movies you can see the massive protection, and multiply it by ten for the actual protection.

Hello. Well, no one robs the Mint nor the gold in Fort Knox because they know they'd be either dead or in a whole heap of trouble big time. So they go the more quick-n-easy route. I think there needs to be tougher laws for those who rob banks and convenience stores. They should send them down the pike for a much longer time to deter others from doing it... hopefully. They should go try doing it in Iraq or Iran... they'd have a hand gone. Yeow!

The main reason is the money is not worth anything anymore. With Bush blowing 500 billion on a stupid war what do you think the US dollar is worth ? The Euro and Canadian dollar etc etc have gained ground over the US buck. When they end the war who is going to pay for it ???

There's less money in the mint than there is on the street and access to the money on the street is a whole lot easier to get to. It's about organized crime, Mafia, Mexican and other gangs etc.

I'm guessing armed guards and security cameras, not to mention it would be easily traced since it would be all sequencial.
