There are liberals then there are Liberals. If you're asking "What would America be without Democrats?", it's an entirely different question.

At this point in time the Democratic party's press is overrun by far-left liberals, and the Republican party's press is overrun by far-right conservatives. Both parties still have plenty of moderates, but at the moment they aren't getting much press.

You'll notice that only when the far left and the far right get a lot closer to the middle are any bills passed. The rest of the time very little gets done.

So, if there were only far-left liberals, there wouldn't be any balance, and we'd be on a runaway train to the far left, just as if there were only far-right conservatives, there wouldn't be any balance, and we'd be on a runaway train to the right. As it stands, with very close to a 50/50 split in the house and senate, with Democrats leading by a slim margin, and with a Republican president, we finally have an almost ideal government where almost nothing can get done.

Remember that when it's time to vote, and make sure we keep that ratio where very little will be changed at all...oops, wait a minute, isn't that the definition of conservate-ive.

...and it's very likely we'd still be a British colony except that Britain has become fairly liberal and probably wouldn't have kept it's colonies...oh! It didn't, did it?

If liberals had never existed, people would have gotten nowhere throughout history.

Conservatives can disagree with that all they like, but it's pure ignorance they're fueled on.

Searching for a new world to colonize? A liberal idea of it's time.

The earth isn't a flat disc? Liberal idea of it's time.

Being unique or of any religion other than Catholic in early Europe? Persecutably liberal for it's time.

Anti-slavery, races with equal rights? Liberal idea once again.

Women's rights? Still liberal.

Advancements in technology and science? The latest liberal-made advancement.

Every conservative on here is a hypocrite. As conservatives of the past completely opposed everything to do with change. Including the computer they're currently using.

Well until the Democratic Congress gets a few more senators and flushes the rest of the dead branch republicans we still look like a colony of England with closet Nazi-Israeli's pulling the strings of the media and demonizing Islam, and shaming Christianity by the fruit of it's tree.

You'd have a club law oriented Country, and the now moderate Conservatives would probably develop more liberal, just to protect the "weaker" ones.

I think a good balance of liberal thinking and some conservative values are a good basis to run a Country. Unfortunately it is impossible to reconcile all people, so a bit empathy, good will and respect should be shown from every body.

The founding fathers were liberals.

They gave men rights that had no rights under Britain.

The allowed open discussion of what the government would be.

They gave everyone the freedom to question the government.

They actually would align themselves with Democrats than today's Republicans. Republicans are the British of modern days.

Today's socialist liberals are not the same as the founding fathers liberal position.

Please explain how quasi-socialism and political correctness, limiting free speech, and personal property rights are like classical liberals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classical_liberalism

But you are right, about Neo-con's, just statists like social liberals. Personally, I think Jefferson and Madison would be pissed at both the Democrats and Republicans.

I guess some people really can't handle the truth, eh? I'm still trying to figure out how free market, small government liberals, like Jefferson and Madison, are like big government, quasi-socialist modern liberals. I'm stumped.

Imagine a world without liberals. Imagine a world without diversity training, gay marriage, abortion on demand, gun control, environmentalists, anti-american war protesters, The United Nations, France, Illegal Aliens, The National Education Association, multiculturalism, National Organization for Women, the New Age Movement, Hippies, Tax increases, body piercing, Hollywood celebrities, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, the American Association of Retired Peoples, Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union, San Francisco, Hybrid Automobiles, moveon.org, Earthfirst!, Howard Dean, Hillary Clinton, Democratic National Committee, Planned Parenthood, Rock the Vote, MTV, Ted Kennedy, etc.

What you have just read is the text displayed on a popular T-shirt that sells to people of a certain political ideology. But can you guess which one? Surely it must the liberals. Surely this shirt is presented to display the many beneficial programs and causes, which liberals have stood for over the years that would not be in existence without left wingers. Surely the world spoken of in this T-shirt is a grim one, one without Planned Parenthood around to help teenagers have safe sex and avoid unwanted pregnancies and STD's, without the American Association of Retired Peoples which supports the elderly all across the country, without hybrid automobiles which save money on fossil fuels and contribute to a healthier environment, without the National Education Association which ensures that every American citizen gets a proper learning experience. Surely this shirt is intended to paint an image of what a horrible world it would be without liberals.

Wrong. Believe it or not, this shirt is a hot seller on Rightwingstuff.com. Apparently conservatives have some grudge against alternative energy, education and old people, not to mention multiculturalism.

Now I understand that liberals and conservatives simply disagree on certain things. Liberals tend to believe that gay people have a biological predisposition to be attracted to members of the same sex while conservatives tend to believe they are making a deliberate and sinful choice. Liberals tend to believe that the United Nations is a helpful tool in making international decisions while conservatives tend to believe that no other country has the right to tell the U.S. what to do.

But can't we all agree on some things? I fail to see any harm in hybrid automobiles, multiculturalism or women's rights, unless one is a misogynistic xenophobe who hates the environment.

I was surprised not only that this shirt existed but that it was a top seller. What the hell? Have a majority of conservatives really decided to rally against amnesty international? I knew the country was moving farther and farther to the right, but I didn't think that meant we were moving farther back in time.

And usually when conservatives restate a liberal viewpoint, they at least find a way to make it sound unappealing. But not in this case. I would wear this T-Shirt, it makes as strong a point for liberals as it does for conservatives.

I thought we had progressed a little bit since the days of segregation and sexism, but this shirt demonstrates that some of us haven't even progressed since the Stone Age.

Well, on the real left/right scale, Republicans are liberals too. Why? We believe in democracy and freedom and are not for monarchy. In America, our left/right spectrum is different then the broader one. So, in the broader sense of conservativism, yes we would still be British.

America would be a 3rd world nation if liberals weren't around.

There would be no minimum wage, no EPA, no regulation at all, no social security, no medicare, no decent schools, no opposing voice, no help for the old, disabled, etc. No union, no worker safety, no nothing actually.

Just like 3rd world nations.
