3 and 4/20 + 2 and 5/20 = 5 and 9/20; 3 plus 2 is 5, 1/5 and 1/4 are both common denominator to 20, 1/5*1=4/4=4/20, 1/4*1=5/5=5/20, then add 4/20 and 5/20 to 9/20, and there you have it, answer 5 and 9/20 or 5.45

The answer is 5 and 9/20. All you are doing is adding 3 + 2 = 5 and then adding (1/5) and (1/4) and the way to do that is by finding the common denominator of both fractions which is 20. (1/5) then becomes (4/20) and (1/4) becomes (5/20). (4/20) + (5/20) = 9/20

Multiply 1/5 by 4 to get 4/20. Then multiply 1/4 by 5 to get 5/20. This way it is in like terms. Then just add 3 and 4/20 to 2 and 5/20. You get 5 and 9/20.
