I've had both and nvidia and an ATI. I've found that nvidia's drivers were easier for me to deal with but I haven't had a problem with either brand and would suggest both.
A good site to start from would be www.tomshardware.com They have many different reviews on computer hardware and graphics cards. I've found this site helpful in the past. I would base which one to get off price and performance and not just brand when you are dealing with these brands.

I have two different models of each currently in use and they all work fine. From time to time, ATI or Nvidia comes up with something that tends to excel at a certain price point and instantly becomes best sellers.
And both of them come up with good overclockers .
