Most ppl have no problem leaving it on for long time periods. When I do - I often get a "low on virtual memory" message. It seems easier for me to boot and reboot rather than worry about that becoming a problem.
I have a Dell Dimension2400 and wonder if that is typical of this model.

You can leave it on for as long as you like especially if it is in a well ventilated environment. But then you will be wasting electricity and you might end up as a big contributor to greenhouse gases.
