In the Balkans during the centuries leading up to the Middle Ages, there was a lot of tribal warfare. It continues to this day.

In the Germanic lands, there was also a lot of tribal warfare, but the practice of the Germans of killing every male taller than an oxcart resulted in the conquered people being docile and compliant.

This practice of annihilating opposition instead of negotiating with it or even sometimes losing is responsible, in my opinion, for the Germanic attitude of needing to feel as if they are always right.

They are wonderful people, though. Just assume the attitude right along with them, and they become nice as pie. ;-)
