I like Al, but smart and ethical people never win elections. Government funding of alternative fuel programs just doesn't seem to work very well. There's too much pressure from oil interests in government, so money gets wasted on stuff that never seems to get finished.
*
A better question, is why is our government (and media) ignoring stuff already out there, that works right now?
*
Take a look at this car:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:
-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Yes indeed, it is a real car, being built right now for fleet use. PG&E is one of the customers.
*
Did you know that driving on grid electricity only costs a penny or two per mile, MUCH less than gasoline? This is not idle hype, I drive an electric vehicle myself, I know this to be true.
*
Interested? Here's a page with more info on electric cars, including EVs you can buy RIGHT NOW for as little as $5000:

No, I wouldn't vote for Al Gore. But, I would support an increase in gasoline tax if it were part of a comprehensive energy policy.

Yes, but knowing Gore's luck with elections, the Republicans would figure out how to steal the Presidency from the poor guy all over again.
