When the Treasurer of the United States (NOT the Secretary of the Treasury, as stated previously), a letter is placed after the year.
On Series 2004 notes, the Treasurer is Rosario Marin.
On Series 2004A notes, the Treasurer is Anna Escobedo Cabral.
The year changes when the design changes or the Secretary of the Treasury changes. On both 2004 and 2004A notes, the Secretary of the Treasury is John A. Snow. On Series 2006 notes, now being printed, the Secretary of the Treasury is Henry Paulsen.

A notice interior the economic international is a promise to pay. as an occasion, in case you borrow money to purchase a motor vehicle or a house, you sign a "notice", promising the economic corporation which you would be able to pay them lower back below the words of the notice. The greenback bill you have is a notice from the Federal Reserve Banks to pay you. The Federal Reserve is a private entity well liked by the help of the U. S. Congress in 1913 by way of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. ahead of the corporation of the Fed Reserve Banks, people had "US Notes" issued with the help of the U. S. Treasury branch. some people would say the U. S. economic device has been controlled with the help of deepest banks ever considering the fact that then. enable me provide an occasion. Say they challenge $a million million (with the help of fiat, meaning, arbitrarily, devoid of gold to lower back up the money). the U. S. government borrows this $a million million to pay for its expenditures (payroll, construction dams or roads, and so forth). In substitute, the U. S. government subject concerns bonds lower back to the Federal Reserve The bond value is extra desirable than $a million million via fact the Federal Reserve fees activity. Say the activity is $50,000. So now there is $a million million in stream. yet the place would the government get this $50,000 .... considering the fact that all money is issued with the help of the Federal Reserve to start with. Therein lies the challenge.

The A indicates a second series of notes. Sometimes they change the secretary of treasury and when the new one starts using their signature the series changes from 2004 to 2004A.

An "A" near the year means it's the FIRST series of bills 00000001-10000000 or whatever. If it doesn't have an "A" it means it's a bill from a series AFTER the ones with "A's"
