What happens if you put a car battery in backwards?

Besides blowing up and possible ruining some expensive electronics in the car, you can pretty much throw away any clothes you were wearing, as in about 3 days they will have many little burn holes from the battery acid.

most newer cars have a main 100 to 200 amp fuse that pops when this happens. It's ussually a 30-40 dollar dealership item, but typically it prevents any serious damage to the rest of the car.

The universe as we know it would come to an end. Starter would probably try to run backwards and that might cause damage.

Might cause damage to the computer and maybe the alternator. Once you start it up, it'd try to charge it and being in backwards, something would have to give and it might be the alt.

depends what type of car . and of coz the year , you could do this in early models , 60's and some seventies , but when cars strated using alternators , it all got serious , you burn out the regulator in the alternator , and but they are fused now , but you'l still need to repair , the burned out bits , and computers dont like this either , and because they are all sealed units now ( solid state ) they will probably need replacing , remember guys that design these things still factor in murphy's law , it just costs more money now when you make these mistakes ,

I done that once and blew one of the main fuses leading from the negative (black) terminal took me a couple of hours to get at the thing to replace the fuse

bad things. You could blow some fuses, blow some computer chips and sensors. So try and be careful when you replace the battery. Red to +, and black to -. Good luck
