Firstly don't think about collecting from the wild you don't know enough about what to collect and some are deadly.
The alternatives are called mushrooms and you get them from the store or supermarket. Cooked lightly in butter with a dash of orange juice and served hot with bacon and eggs they are great. Other types of fungi include Truffles a very taste and expensive treat in France and Quarn products for Vegetarians.

I am an amature mycologist. I love morel mushrooms along with many others. Some of my favorite edible and non-edible identification websites are:
http://www.mushroomexpert.com/
http://www.morelmushroomhunting.com/
In years past, there has been a morel mushroom spotting progression map for the U.S. - I have not found that yet this year.
I must caution you that before you begin your mission of searching for edible fungus, there are some definate rules to follow. We call it the rule of 2. This means that you must ALWAYS Positively identify any fungus you intend to eat. You do this by using 2 field guides (and include spore prints with unfamiliar species) - or one field guide and one experenced forager - or two experenced foragers. Any combination will work until you are familiar with what you are looking for.
One of my new favorite fungus treats is Corn Smut. Corn Smut is a fungus that grows on ears of corn. It has the flavor of corn and mushrooms (go figure!). The first time I tried this, I had to use mind over matter to convince myself that it was going to be good - now I'm hooked! This is a Delicacy in Mexico. Farmers get a premium there on their corn crop if corn smutt is present. They even can it there - but I have it on good authority that it is best enjoyed fresh.
You want to collect the corn mushroom while it is still solid - not slimy. I then cut the kernels off the cob and place them in a skillet with a little butter and an onion (a little garlic & green pepper is also nice). I then cook until the onion starts to carmelize and the corn mushroom will expand and make a popping sound. I then like to add some fresh sweet corn cut from the cob and finish cooking until heated throughout. Place this mixture on a heated flour tortilla and enjoy. Top with cheese, sour cream - what ever you like for mexican food toppings.
You may wish to go out the first time with a local group of specialists. My local group can be found at the following website:
http://www.sph.umich.edu/~kwcee/mmhc/
I also belong to a National Group that may give you a clue if there is a group meeting in your area (if you are from the US).
http://www.namyco.org/
Going out with a group is a safe and excellent way to learn about fungus. I hope some of this helps. Best of luck and STAY SAFE!
