The package usually says 500 songs if it's on mp3 and 1000 if it's on WMA. It all depends. You see songs are usually calculated at 4 minutes in length.

If you put in classical music where songs tend to be longer than you'll get a whole lot less songs. However, if you put punk rock songs or any of those genres where songs tend to be fast and short (example: Operation Ivy) then you'll surely get twice the amount suggested.

Edit- My box also says this:

"Song capacity is based on 128 kbps bit rate, 4 minutes per song; actual capacity varies by content."

To get more out of your iPod you should put in WMA songs at 64 kbps bit rate.

it holds 500 songs, give or take because of the length of them.
that's kinda of a rip-off if you think about it cuz i have a creative zen v plus and it is a 2GB and holds 1000 songs. way better and you get more for $50 less!

about 5Mb per song, maybe 400 songs depending on bitrate/file size.
