You can use fabric paint, available at a crafts store. Apply it thinly, of course, using a brush. Then it won't crack. When it's thin, fabric paint is lightly flexible. If you need it thick, I'd use it in dots. Make tiny dots all over the umbrella to form your picture or pattern.

RE:
What kind of paint can you use on nylon?
My friend and I are trying to paint swirls on umbrellas and want to find a paint to us on nylon that will have minimal to no fading or chipping. Any ideas?

The best things to use for painting nylon are
Pigment and Dyes
However, be careful, if you are actually using the umbrella, some dyes can wash off or fade so its best to research you products.

Today, tights, also called pantyhose, are made from a material which is inert when it comes to a dye as we know it. The color of the material is determined during manufacture, Changing the color after the fact is mostly impossible.
