much more heavily built than gasoline to withstand the very high compression ratios...Gasoline operates at about a 1:9 compression, diesels operate at about 1:22 compression. The entire engine is much more rugged to withstand these extreme pressures. Good luck

thats a good question , as most of the parts are the same as a petrol engine , unless its a turbo diesel , the c/shaft and conrods and pistons are stronger , as well as the bearings , but over all its made from the same bits as a petrol engine , the main reason is because of demand , diesel engines are more economical , and thus dont cost as much to run as petrol engines , and so the suppliers charge you more for having a diesel engine , thats why the fuel is also dearer , even though , it costs less to make , I have been reparing both for the last 30 years , and have put petrol parts in diesel engines , you'd be suprised what you can learn to do ;)

The engine is very heavy and so is the rotating assembly. Injectors and turbos are extremely expensive to produce and are manufactured by an out side company. Also the auto maker has to buy the product from the diesel manufacturer which increases cost.

diesel engines have higher compression ratios typically 18:1compared to gas engines 9:1 therefore all engine components have to be made stronger. also diesel engines have a longer life expectancy typically 250000 miles easily

They require much stronger compression to function and therefore must be built much heavier and stronger. They also will have a more complex fuel injection system.
