when does 101 north start getting congested in the morning?

I need to drive to SFO from santa clara to catch an 8:30am flight, the shortest route is through 101 north... how crazy it is to drive on 101 north in the morning? when does it usually start getting congested? Thanks~~

Start very very early. Earlier than you normally would. You'll be in rush hour. And every morning I wake up at 5 a.m. and see the news and about every highway is clogged. Give yourself plenty of time at that hour of morning.
