Andersen was born in a slum in Odense in 1805, now a museum. He was admitted to the University of Copenhagen in 1828. Also in Copenhagen, he produced what is considered his first important literary work, Fodrejse fra Holmens Kanal til Ãstpynten af Amager i aarene.
