I had a strange dream the other night and in it a man named Dan Cooper handed me a envelope with a crudely drawn map in it and the initials D.B.C. on the front. It was the first time I had ever heard of D.B. Cooper and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

D.B. Cooper died parachuting at night in the Rockies. He's like Jesse James, lived a long time in mythology after his death.

Here's a pretty good site with lots of information about D.B. Cooper and his crime...

http://www.crimelibrary.com/criminal_mind/scams/DB_Cooper/index.html

Basically, he was an extortionist. He showed up on an airplane, flashed what may have been a bomb, and asked for a comparatively small sum of money ($200,000 in 20-dollar bills) and some parachutes. After letting all but the flight crew off the plane, he had it take off again an jumped out. He has never been seen since.

Part of the mystique of his case is in its lack of solution and the way in which it was committed. He was obviously not a career criminal, because fingerprints, descriptions, and other traces left behind never led to anyone. Likewise, he not only never harmed anyone, but seemed in some ways to be considerate of the other people... most of the planes' passengers didn't even know something was amiss until the end. And, of course, neither him nor the money (for the most part) were ever seen again.

It is that latter point which makes people suspect that he met an untimely end. The parachutes he was given were brightly coloured and the serial number of every bill he received was photographed. At one point, an official offered a reward of $100,000 for any one of the 100,000 twenties that were in Cooper's sack. Nobody could find even one. The only portion of that cash that has ever turned up was found washed up at the side of a river heavily degraded (that was three years after the crime).

Though some theorize that the remainder of the money is hidden somewhere (along with the never-found parachute), the most likely scenario is that body, money, and 'chute are all at the bottom of the Columbia river somewhere. By now, they would all be completely unidentifiable.

Still... he MIGHT have lived. There have been plenty of re-inactments and copy-cats who pulled off more or less the exact same caper. The primary difference being that all except Cooper were caught, or at least scraped off their 'landing' site.

Most people have suggested that he is dead from his jump from the 727. Perhaps he landed in the Columbia River, which is about where he bailed out. There was a man just two years ago who claimed to be him, but he lacked the money and the knowledge of what actually happened, so it's likely that wasn't him.

All I know is he robbed a bank, hi jacked a plane and jumped out with the money. About 30 years ago. Some say he was killed in the jump, but others say not so. Some say some of the money was found.
