You don't have to sign the image to copyright it. You can code the image to prove it is yours with a small color pattern and put the copyright notice (not just your signature) outside the actual image. If you are going to sign it, the traditional locations are horizonally in the lower left or lower right corners and vertically up the side in the lower right corner.
