my idea, is it's someone that drinks in the morning and craves a drink at a specific time of day

it is many things, there are alcoholics that drink all day or binge drink or have blackouts or just drink a lot and cant stop when they do drink

I'm an alcoholic (sober a long time). Here's your answer.
An alcoholic is a person who does not have the ability to consistently control his or her drinking. It has little to do with how often a person drinks, what they drink, what time of day they drink, or any other detail like that . . . it's about what happens once the drink is taken.
Note the reference to "consistent" control here. It isn't that if a person can sometimes stop at one or two drinks, they can't be an alcoholic. Nearly every alcoholic can stop at one or two drinks . . . sometimes. But if you really just never quite know what's going to happen when you pick up a drink, if you start out planning to have a couple but in the back of your mind you know that you very well might end up loaded, then you have your answer. The booze is making the decision of when you stop. Not you. And that's alcoholism.

Someone who has three problems:
1) When they start drinking, they have little or no control over the amount they take
2) They cannot stay stopped without the obsession that a drink will help them feel better (which leads back to problem number 1)
3) Over any considerable amount of time, the situation worsens. It does not get better on its own or stay the same. It is progressive

Somebody who doesn't know when to put the damn bottle or whatever they are drinking alcohol or liquor out of down.

To me it's someone who spends most of his/her life drunk & gets lots of hang overs.
