Big sigma normally means sum (and its bad practice to use it for other things)
Sigma [1 to 3] r^2 = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2
little sigma is often used to denote standard deviation, but it can be used for anything.

its a greek letter that is used to add up mathematical expressions [summations]. itll come in handy in 8th grade or 9th grade becasue it is a way of putting a mathematical equation. like sigma with a 5 over the top adn a k=1 at the bottom and a [3k+1] next to it means you add up all the values of 3k+1 using all the kz starting with 1 and ending w. 5
