A dance academy is like a school, a dance studio is the physical object (the space) where the school is conducted.

It's mostly what they choose to call themselves.

In the old days when these things were regulated the academy was a place for serious students to study over a series of years, and performances were not highlighted. The studio was a more short range place where dance students went to polish skills and then perform.

Today anyone can open an academy or studio, call it what they want, and put into a strip mall down on the corner. There are no regulations any longer so one has to be more careful.
