It's not always how much you get paid but how far your money will go in certain cities. We get paid well here in CA but the cost of living does not make it seem that way. Not only check out the salaries as someone suggested but the comparison of the cost of living of cities.

Usually, pay is higher in more expensive cities. For instance, you would expect to make more money in NY or San Francisco than you would in Oklahoma City or Louisville, but you're going to wind up spending a lot more money in those places too, so you might actually end up with less cash at the end of the month.
