Honestly, you're trying to make things easier for him and are making it harder.

If he "eventually takes the bottle" then it means you do have options. The key statement in this question was "it's very distressing for me".... unfortunately you're going to have to toughen up and transition him over. It will be tough at first, but he should adjust and start taking the bottle much easier after just a few days. Do it now, while you have the time, rather than last minute.

I'm sorry. First of all, I don't know what a "dummy" is. Is that a pacifier?

I had this same problem. It took me 2 months to get my daughter to learn how to nurse, and then, after she learned, she stopped taking a bottle! So, it was really a problem when I had to go back to work. They kept saying to try different bottles, or that she will eventually take it if she's hungry enough. It's so hard to listen to your baby cry and know what they want, but not be able to give it to them. The truth is, your baby will just have to adjust. Babies are very adaptable, so if you start introducing a bottle now, and giving him no other option, he will take it. The trick is to have someone else feed him a bottle. If you're trying to feed him a bottle, and he sees your breast right there, he's going to be very mad and frustrated.

Hang in there. I know it's tough! Luckily, he won't remember any of it, and hopefully, within a week or two, he'll be happily on the bottle.

pretty much cold turkey don't give him the breast, only provide the bottle. if you want start out only in the morning or afternoon or night don't give the breast only offer the bottle until he takes it. I KNOW!!!!!!! how hard it is not only for the baby but you also to provide that comfort, but that is the only way I could get my daughter off the breast and onto the bottle at a year old.
Its hard but stick with it, babies are creatures of habit, once you reform the habit, whatever YOU as the parent implemented will be habitual.
GOOD LUCK!!! I KNOW ITS HARD!

try expressing then fedding it to your liitle man in a bottle by the sounds of it, he does not like formula. and some times a dummy is a good soother if it's only used to put him too sleep. he could also be teething and need the relief of a dummy now and then Good luck with it all.
