What I am trying to get as is, I am middle class and I don't have servants and live in a huge townhouse in the city. Why did they?

Jobs - they would have a senior position in a large company, say a Chief Engineer on one of the many railways, or they would be in business on their own account, say as a lawyer, doctor or architect, or a clergyman of the Church of England. Where they lived - in a nice suburb in a largish house with probably at least three servants. Income, if they didn't work.

Middle - Oh probably having a shop or a trade. Think comparatively to the class mostly driven out of Iraq by Saddam.
