If there was a large earthquake in the vicinity, the groundshaking is a clue to move to higher ground. In the great Tsumami in the indian ocean the classic sign was a rapidly recceeding sea before the tidal wave stikes. If the tide goes out unexpectedly and rapidly, head for higher ground. Third world countries don't have the tools to warn folks.

Tsunamis are triggered by earthquakes on the ocean floor, so the only warning sign is an earthquakes out in the ocean. These can be hard to detect, so sometimes there essentially is no warning. The tsunami that just happened, happened so close to the island that they had no warning because the few scientists that observed the earthquake took longer in calculating where it came from than it took it to hit land

Tsunamis are caused by earthquakes under the sea, volcanic eruption; sudden slip of rocks under sea may all create Tsunami. Will you believe if I said that I have issued the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our Indian coast to local T.V.stations. But it was ignored. My scientific knowledge and the instrument quake alarm designed by me helped to issue the warning.
Warning systems.
Deep sea fishes will come to shore or die on beaches. It was noticed at Malaysia 3 days before Tsunami,
The animals will behave tamely, the police dogs barged without any reason on that day,
The sea water will reseed, It happened in some places in our Indian coast,
The water in ponds becomes muddy and flashes out of shore. It happened at Nagai the most affected place in India.
Now the recent one affected the place Salomon Island gave the warning of 5 minutes only between sensed earthquake wave and Tsunami wave. In this case even the buoys are not going to help us. To know more visit my slide show at

The water retreats back first, then it will make a giant wave. If you ever see the ocean go back farther than it should... RUN! get somewhere high and sturdy! Also, pay attention to animals. Even dogs and cats are more in tune with these things than humans. If they are acting funny or all running in one direction- follow them!

The sea will draw back further than it ever has during the lowest tide ever. That's really about the only one unless a warning system sounds the alert.

the water would recede then water will start rising back up and the wave will come. also if animals start acting funny and birds start leaving that could mean something is about to happen
