Some earthly stuff does matter. Family and friends matter. The relationships you have while your here on earth, and what you do with your time here in regards to the people in your life, does matter. And it was when I nearly died and my family thought they had lost me forever that I learned that. We are not just wasting time here while we wait to go to heaven...

Earthly stuff by itself doesnt matter, but theit is the means to gain Non earthly things like character, and knowledge - you need books and life experience.
You need to gain earthly things and then lose them to gain that life experience.
